Social enterprises share common characteristics:
- Enterprise orientation - they directly produce goods or services for sale.
- Social aims - they have distinct social aims such as job creation, training, or provision of local services.
- Ethics - may include a commitment to building skills. Profits are principally re-invested to achieve social objectives. Increasingly, social enterprises are measuring their social impact.
- Social ownership - many (but not all) social enterprises are also characterised by joint ownership. Their structures are defined by the type of stakeholders involved.
